Adrenal Vein Sampling (AVS)

Care Before the Procedure

  • Preparation:
    • Follow specific instructions regarding medication adjustments and fasting.
    • Discuss any allergies or medical conditions with your healthcare provider.
  • Health Disclosure:
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any history of bleeding disorders, medications, or prior surgeries on the adrenal glands.

Care During the Procedure

  • IV sedation or local anaesthesia is typically used for patient comfort.
  • The catheter is inserted and guided to the adrenal veins with imaging assistance.
  • Blood samples are collected from both adrenal veins and a peripheral site.
  • Patient Experience:
    • Patients may experience mild discomfort during catheter insertion, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated.
    • Continuous monitoring of vital signs and comfort levels is maintained throughout the procedure.

Care After the Procedure

  • Patients are monitored for a short period after the procedure for any complications.
  • Normal activities can usually be resumed within a day, depending on individual recovery.
  • Results:
    • Hormone levels from the collected samples are analysed to determine the source of aldosterone production.
    • Results are interpreted by endocrinologists, who will discuss the findings and recommend further management based on the results.
  • Follow-Up:
    • Depending on the results, treatment options may include medications, lifestyle modifications, or surgical intervention.
    • Regular follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor blood pressure and hormone levels.
  • Note: Adrenal Vein Sampling is a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing adrenal function and managing conditions related to hormone production. Adhering to preparation instructions and maintaining communication with your healthcare provider are crucial for optimal outcomes.

Eligibility

  • AVS is typically recommended for:

    • Patients with suspected primary aldosteronism based on clinical and laboratory findings.
    • Individuals with resistant hypertension or hypokalemia (low potassium levels) that cannot be explained by other factors.
  • Contraindications:
    • Severe comorbidities that may increase surgical risk.
    • Inability to tolerate anaesthesia or sedation.
