Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

Care Before the Procedure

  • Preparation:
    • Fasting for 8-12 hours before the test is essential.
    • Discuss any medications you are taking with your healthcare provider, as some may affect test results.
  • Health Disclosure:
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any medical conditions, allergies, or recent illnesses.

Care During the Procedure

  • You will remain at the testing facility during the entire procedure to ensure accurate monitoring.
  • After consuming the glucose solution, you may be asked to relax and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Patient Experience:
    • Some patients may experience nausea or lightheadedness after ingesting the glucose solution, but these symptoms are typically mild and temporary.

Care After the Procedure

  • Post-Procedure Care:
    • You can resume normal activities after the test, including eating and drinking.
    • If you experience any concerning symptoms (e.g., severe nausea, dizziness), contact your healthcare provider.
  • Results:
    • Blood glucose levels are interpreted based on standard thresholds:
      • Normal: Fasting < 100 mg/dL; 2-hour < 140 mg/dL.
      • Prediabetes: Fasting 100-125 mg/dL; 2-hour 140-199 mg/dL.
      • Diabetes: Fasting ≥ 126 mg/dL; 2-hour ≥ 200 mg/dL.
    • Results will be discussed with you and may lead to further testing or management plans.
  • Follow-Up:
    • Depending on the results, lifestyle changes, monitoring, or medication may be recommended.
    • Regular follow-up tests may be advised to monitor glucose levels over time.
  • Note: The OGTT is an important tool for diagnosing glucose metabolism disorders. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for preparation and care to ensure accurate results.

Eligibility

  • The test is typically recommended for:
    • Children with unexplained short stature or growth delays.
    • Adults with symptoms suggestive of growth hormone deficiency (e.g., decreased muscle mass, increased body fat, low energy levels).
    • Patients undergoing evaluation for other pituitary or endocrine disorders.

    • Fasting for 8-12 hours before the test is essential.
