Cancer Screening

Care Before the Procedure

  • Risk Assessment:
    • Discuss personal/family history, lifestyle, and genetic risks with a healthcare provider.
    • Determine appropriate screening tests and intervals.
  • Preparation:
    • Colonoscopy: Bowel prep (clear liquid diet, laxatives).
    • Mammogram: Avoid deodorants/lotions on the day of the test.
    • PSA Test: No ejaculation 24–48 hours prior (may affect results).
    • Education: Understand the purpose, benefits, and potential risks (e.g., false positives, overdiagnosis). Provide informed consent where required.

Care During the Procedure

  • Process: Tests are typically quick, outpatient procedures performed by trained technicians or clinicians.
  • Examples: Mammogram: Breast compression for X-ray imaging.
  • Pap Test: Cervical cell collection with a speculum and brush.
  • Colonoscopy: Sedated endoscopic examination of the colon.
  • Patient Role: Follow instructions (e.g., hold breath during imaging, relax during exams). Communicate discomfort or anxiety to the care team.

Care After the Procedure

Results Follow-Up:

  • Normal results: Continue routine screening as recommended.
  • Abnormal results: Additional testing (e.g., biopsy, MRI) to confirm or rule out cancer.
  • Positive Findings: Referral to specialists (e.g., oncologist, surgeon) for diagnosis and treatment planning.
Counseling on options for precancerous lesions (e.g., polyp removal, LEEP for cervical dysplasia).
  • Long-Term Management:
    • Adhere to regular screening schedules based on risk.
    • Adopt preventive behaviors (e.g., smoking cessation, healthy diet, HPV vaccination).Update screening plan if risk factors change (e.g., new family history).
  • False Positives/Negatives:
    • Understand that no test is perfect; discuss uncertainties with your provider.
    • Avoid unnecessary anxiety from false positives or false reassurance from false negatives.
  • Note: Screening recommendations evolve with new evidence. Shared decision-making with a healthcare provider is essential to balance benefits (early detection) and risks (overdiagnosis, false alarms). Screening is not recommended for all cancers or all individuals-focus on evidence-based tests for which you are eligible.
