Hormone Therapy

Care Before the Procedure

  • Comprehensive Evaluation:
    • Blood tests to measure baseline hormone levels.
    • Review of personal and family medical history (e.g., cancer, blood clots, cardiovascular disease).
    • Discussion of goals, risks, and benefits.
  • Precautions:
    • Disclose all current medications, supplements, and lifestyle habits (e.g., smoking).
    • Screen for contraindications (e.g., history of breast cancer, stroke, or liver disease).
  • Personalized Plan:
    • Select appropriate hormone type, dose, and delivery method (e.g., oral, transdermal).
    • Set a timeline for follow-up and monitoring.

Care During the Procedure

  • Administration: Patients self-administer treatments at home (e.g., apply gels, take pills) or receive injections in-clinic. Consistency is critical-doses must be taken as prescribed.
  • Monitoring:
    • Regular blood tests to ensure hormone levels are within target ranges.
    • Tracking symptoms and side effects through journals or apps.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments:
    • Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D for bone health.
    • Exercise regularly to support metabolic and cardiovascular health.

Care After the Procedure

  • Short-Term Monitoring:
    • Initial follow-up within 3–6 months to assess symptom relief and adjust doses.
    • Address side effects (e.g., bloating, headaches, mood changes) promptly.
  • Long-Term Management:
    • Annual check-ups including blood tests, bone density scans, and cardiovascular health assessments.
    • For gender-affirming care, periodic evaluations to align therapy with transitioning goals.
  • Risk Mitigation:
    • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed.
    • Report unusual symptoms (e.g., chest pain, vision changes, severe headaches) immediately.
  • Discontinuation:
    • Gradually taper hormones under medical supervision to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
    • Transition to alternative therapies if needed (e.g., non-hormonal treatments for osteoporosis).
  • Note: Hormone therapy requires careful, individualized management. Benefits must be weighed against potential risks (e.g., increased risk of blood clots or breast cancer with certain types of HT). Always work with a qualified healthcare provider to ensure safe and effective treatment.
