Menopause Therapy: A New Era of Precision and Care

Menopause is a natural transition that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, but its impact goes far beyond hot flashes and night sweats. From bone density to brain health , muscle strength, and breast wellness , menopause can influence nearly every aspect of well-being.

In July 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued updated guidance on hormone therapy (HT) and comprehensive care for menopausal women, emphasizing individualized treatment, risk-benefit analysis , and holistic support. This marks a pivotal shift from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to a tailored, evidence-based care model — exactly what we’ve been championing at RBHMC.

What Does the July 2025 FDA Statement Say?

The FDA’s updated position includes the following key points:

  • Hormone Therapy (HT) remains the most effective treatment for moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (e.g., hot flashes, night sweats).

  • Transdermal and low-dose options are preferred for women at risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Non-hormonal therapies, including SSRIs/SNRIs and newer neurokinin receptor antagonists, are now validated for use in women who cannot or prefer not to use HT.

  • The FDA also emphasized the importance of early intervention (within 10 years of menopause) to preserve brain, bone, and metabolic health .

  • Long-term therapy should be personalized and reassessed annually.

The 4 Bs: Brain, Bone, Brawn, and Breast – A Holistic View of Menopause

:brain: Brain Health

Menopause is associated with memory complaints, mood swings, and increased risk of cognitive decline. The FDA now encourages early evaluation of cognitive symptoms and the use of HT where appropriate, especially in perimenopausal women.

At RBHMC, we use validated cognitive screening tools to assess mental clarity, mood, and memory. Our collaborative care model includes neuropsychology and lifestyle medicine support.

:bone: Bone Health

Estrogen deficiency accelerates bone loss, increasing the risk of fractures. Bone mineral density (BMD) assessment and fracture risk scoring (FRAX) are now standard recommendations .

RBHMC offers DEXA scanning and integrated bone health clinics with endocrinologist support. Women are counseled on HT, calcium/vitamin D, and other bone-preserving therapies.

:muscle: Brawn (Muscle & Metabolism)

Menopause leads to sarcopenia (muscle loss) and metabolic slowdown, contributing to fatigue and weight gain. The FDA now recognizes that HT, when used appropriately, can preserve lean body mass and reduce visceral fat .

We offer body composition analysis, nutritional counseling , and exercise physiology support to help women maintain strength and vitality.

:reminder_ribbon: Breast Health

Breast safety remains a top concern. The FDA reaffirmed that short-term HT (especially estrogen-only therapy) has a minimal impact on breast cancer risk when started early and used judiciously.

RBHMC follows evidence-based breast screening protocols, including mammography, ultrasound, and breast risk assessments using validated tools like Tyrer-Cuzick scoring .
