Understanding Endometriosis: The Silent Struggle of Millions of Women

30 Jul 2025 | 2 mins

Endometriosis is more than just a painful period—it's a chronic, often debilitating condition that affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. Despite its prevalence, endometriosis remains underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and underestimated in its impact on women's lives.

AT Dr Kiran’s Clinic at Royal Bahrain Medical center at Janabiya, we recognize the devastating toll endometriosis can take—not just on physical health, but also on mental well-being, social life, and fertility. We're here to change that.

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the pelvic lining, and in some cases, beyond. Unlike normal endometrial tissue, these misplaced tissues continue to act as they normally would—thickening, breaking down, and bleeding with each menstrual cycle—but have no way to exit the body. This leads to inflammation, scar tissue, and severe pain.

The Devastating Impact on Daily Life

Women with endometriosis often suffer in silence. The pain is not just physical—it reaches into every aspect of life:

  • Chronic pelvic pain that disrupts work, school, and relationships
  • Emotional distress, anxiety, and depression due to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis
  • Social isolation caused by an inability to participate in normal activities
  • Strained relationships due to misunderstood symptoms and fatigue
  • Infertility, affecting up to 50% of women with the condition

Many women go years without a diagnosis, often dismissed as having "normal period pain" or told it's "all in their head."

Common Symptoms of Endometriosis

Symptoms vary, but common signs include:

  • Severe menstrual cramps that worsen over time
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Painful bowel movements or urination, especially during periods
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Chronic pelvic or lower back pain
  • Fatigue, bloating, and nausea
  • Difficulty conceiving

Diagnosis and Assessment

Diagnosing endometriosis can be challenging. At RBHMC, we use a comprehensive approach:

  • Detailed medical history and symptom tracking
  • Pelvic examination
  • Ultrasound and MRI imaging
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy – a minimally invasive surgical procedure that remains the gold standard for diagnosis

Managing Endometriosis: Pain and Fertility

While there's currently no cure for endometriosis, effective management is possible:

Pain Management

  • Hormonal therapy (e.g., birth control pills, GnRH agonists)
  • Pain relief medications
  • Lifestyle changes and dietary support
  • Laparoscopic surgery to remove endometrial lesions

Fertility Management

  • Fertility-preserving surgery
  • Assisted reproductive technologies (IUI, IVF)
  • Ovulation tracking and fertility counseling

We work closely with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan, focusing not just on symptom relief but also on restoring quality of life and reproductive potential.
